Abstract

Implications of ASEAN’s Response to the Crisis in Myanmar

KIM Hyung Jong

Associate Professor

Department of International Relations, Yonsei University at Wonju

ASEAN‘s responses to the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar since the illegal military coup in February 2021 reveals both its limits and possible roles. Authoritarian governments in ASEAN prefer to engage with the illegal military junta in line with ASEAN’s non-interference principle which would further imperil the group’s coherence and unity. Meanwhile there have been also considerable developments in ASEAN’s responses to the junta. ASEAN has mobilized international pressures on the junta without recognizing it though limited dialogues channels. This paper considers the normative aspects of ASEAN’s response to the crisis to argues the extended advancement of ASEAN’s role can be found in the possible departure from the traditional practice of its norms.
